Meet Le Keux Kent Owner Vicky!

I caught the vintage bug young. From my first-time watching Grease on a VHS as a child, I knew I wanted the bright colours, music, dancing, and milkshakes of the 1950s, and to experience it all in a polka dot prom dress with the fluffiest petticoat underneath.

Throughout the 90s, TV became my go-to source of vintage knowledge – from twin sets and lindy hop on The Clothes Show, rock n’ roll exploding into British teenage culture in Head Over Heels (the soundtrack on cassette tape was my first album), to understanding more about the gender roles of women and girls in my teenage years with Sex, Chips and Rock n Roll and The Hello Girls.

Film continued to be my teacher as I became obsessed with Back to the Future (many years later I would live the dream by attending Secret Cinema in a replica of Lorraine’s peach dress that I made myself), and during summer holidays watched Ealing comedies and discovered the brilliantly funny women of Carry On. But for a gawky teenager growing up in Dorset, this world only lived on TV, and it wasn’t until I was well into my 20’s that I discovered that I really could experience vintage life for myself – and without the misogyny or sexual repression!

Fast forward to 2009 when my university friend told us the exciting news that she was getting married. The first wedding I was attending as an adult and I knew exactly what I was going to wear…Reader, I did wear that polka dot prom dress with the fluffiest petticoat underneath! As soon as I bought that dress, I knew I had to learn how to do the hair and make-up to go with it, and it wasn’t long until I was spending hours on YouTube learning from experts around the world. I couldn’t wait to try them out and I’ll never forget the fun I had, the compliments I received, and most importantly the confidence and empowerment I felt, from the first girl’s night out in Guildford dressed head to toe in full vintage regalia. Of course, it wasn’t long until vintage style migrated into my day to day and my signature bouffant came into its own.

But the story doesn’t end there.

As I became more immersed in vintage life, I soon found myself at a specialist vintage hairdresser in London in my latest attempt to get that authentic look. It was there that I heard the owner’s story of how she made the leap from teacher to vintage business owner and I came away from that appointment having had the seed planted, as well as my newly cut Bettie bangs! That seed has been germinating over the past decade while I was simultaneously growing my events, marketing, management and leadership skills in my day job of student recruitment. After experiencing my own Le Keux makeover for my 40th birthday that seed started budding and has now bloomed into Le Keux Kent. I’m so excited to be able to bring together the professional skills I’ve built over the past 20 years with my love for vintage, and most importantly, I can’t wait to bring that same feeling of confidence, empowerment and pure joy I had to Keuxties across Kent and beyond.
