To start the roll, hold the section of hair you want to style vertically from the head. Place your two fingers a few inches from the root and start to wrap the hair around the,. Wrap just the first coil of hair around the knuckles of your fingers. Now continue to wrap the remaining length of your hair around your fingers, allowing the hair to wrap forwards to span the length of your fingers, making sure not to overlap the hair over the first coil. (the reason why will be explained in a few steps!). Continue to wrap until all of the hair is rolled around your fingers. Now hold the tip of the hair in place with your thumb to secure. To complete the roll, use the index finger of your other hand, and trace inside the curl, around your two fingers, bringing the first coil of hair we created over the top of the rest (this is why we don’t overlap the first coil) this will tuck the ends inside the roll, keeping things nice and neat and preventing any hair from escaping the roll.
Now that we have our smoothed over roll shape, hold both ends of the roll to prevent escaping hair. Bring the roll in towards the scalp and position in place as desired. Use a pin curl clip to secure for now, hairspray and smooth any flyways. Once its set a little, you can go in with the hairgrips. The best anchor points are where the roll first curves into the scalp, gripping here will keep the shape secure and stop any sagging or movement with your roll. You can also place grips on the inside of the roll., If you are new to victory rolls, don’t worry too much about graduating the back whilst you style for now as that technique will come! If your roll sits like the picture above then this can easily be adjusted! To angle the back, gently pull the roll apart from the centre, working your way backwards. Bringing the back to a curve so that its sits neatly covering the parting. Use a hairgrip to secure where the back of the roll first curves into the head and set with hairspray.
If you want to have that curved back from the start just angle your fingers upwards from the back of the roll and use the same method you have just learnt. This will encourage that graduated shape from the back without the need for adjustments. The reason we don’t introduce this first is because it is better to focus on the initial rolling technique which can be easily moulded at the back, the shaped once you have the technique mastered. After all victory rolls can be tricky enough to start without making things overly complicated.
